Analyze PDF
Inspect pages, size, fonts, images, security and metadata
About this tool
Reports what a PDF actually contains: how many pages, its size on disk, page dimensions, which fonts are embedded, how many images it holds, whether it is encrypted, and its metadata. Useful for working out why a file is unexpectedly large, why it renders differently elsewhere, or whether it is protected.
Key features
No download needed
The report is shown in the page rather than saved as a file.
Explains file size
Image and font counts usually account for a PDF that is larger than expected.
Shows security state
Tells you whether the document is encrypted before you try to edit it.
Private
The file is sent over HTTPS and removed from the server after analysis.
Frequently asked questions
- Does analyzing change my file?
- No. The document is read only, and nothing is written back or returned to you as a file.
- Why is my PDF so large?
- Usually embedded images, and sometimes fully embedded font families. The image count here is the first thing to check; Compress PDF or Optimize PDF can then reduce it.
- What does "encrypted" mean here?
- The document has a password or permission restrictions. Use Unprotect PDF with the password to remove them before editing.
- Why do fonts matter?
- A PDF that does not embed its fonts renders with substitutes on machines that lack them, which is the usual cause of a document looking different elsewhere.
